How to Keep Oysters Alive

Oysters are best consumed fresh and alive. This can be a problem if you come home with more oysters than you can eat in a day. Luckily, there is an easy way to keep oysters alive in your refrigerator for up to six weeks.
  • Oyster Storage

Clean the oysters thoroughly. Take each oyster individually and run it under cold water while brushing it with a plastic-bristle brush. Oysters grow in the mud, so if they're fresh, there will be a lot of dirt to remove.

Place the oysters in a plastic food container large enough to hold all of them. Do NOT put the cover on! This will suffocate the oysters and they will go bad before they're ready to be eaten

Lay several damp paper towels over the oysters to cover them. Place the container in the fridge for up to six weeks, and enjoy fresh, live oysters whenever you want.
