- 1
Dig a hole 14 inches deep. The width of the hole will depend on how many bulbs you are planting and their varying sizes.
- 2
Put the dirt you remove in a bucket and mix it with compost and bulb booster. Follow the package directions on the bulb booster for quantity instructions.
- 3
Layer the bottom of the hole with 2 inches of coarse sand and then 2 inches of the dirt mixture.
- 4
Place bulbs in the bottom of the hole that are the largest. The depth at which a bulb is planted is based on the size of the bulb; they are usually planted at a depth of about twice their size. Place several bulbs in the bottom and cover with 2 inches of dirt mix.
- 5
Place the next smallest size bulbs in the hole and try not to put them directly over the ones below. Plant several of these as well. Cover with 2 inches of soil mix. Repeat the process with successively smaller bulbs, with the smallest bulbs 2 inches from the surface so that they can be covered as well.

How to Layer Spring Bulbs
Bulbs provide beautiful flowers throughout the spring and early summer in numerous types and colors from yellow daffodils to purple tulips. Since these flowers bloom at staggered times through the season, and are planted at varying depths in the earth, you can plant them in the same hole for a burst of color that lasts the entire growing season.
