How to Maintain an Outboard

Maintenance is essential to ensure safe and reliable operation of your outboard motor. Failure to properly maintain your motor can result in shorter engine life or possible damage to its components. There are simple steps you can take in order to properly maintain your outboard motor.
  • After Each Use

    • 1

Flush the motor's cooling system if it was used in saltwater or water containing any pollutants.

    • 2

Clean off any salt deposits and flush the exhaust outlet of the propeller and gear case using clean, fresh water.

    • 3

Inspect propeller blades for damage such as chips, dents and bent blades. Any damage to the propeller can cause vibrations and damage to the motor and will reduce efficiency.

Every 100 Hours of Use or Yearly, Whichever Occurs First

    • 1

Lubricate all points of lubrication. More frequent lubrication may be required if operating in saltwater.

    • 2

      Clean spark plugs.

    • 3

Inspect and clean the fuel filter of any contaminants or particles that can become lodged in the filter screen.

    • 4

Adjust the carburetor(s) if required by your motor's manual.

    • 5

Check the timing setup of your outboard.

    • 6

Inspect the corrosion control anodes. Check more often for outboards used in saltwater.

    • 7

Drain and refill gear case lubricant.

    • 8

      Lubricate drive shaft splines.

    • 9

      Check power trim fluid.

    • 10

Inspect battery and look for corrosion on terminals. Clean off all corrosion.

    • 11

      Inspect control cable adjustments.

    • 12

Clean engine deposits with cleaner such as Quicksilver Power Tune Engine Cleaner.

    • 13

Ensure all bolts, nuts, and other fasteners are tight and secure.
