How to Make Hanging Wooden Window Boxes

Window boxes create additional space in which to grow plants and flowers. A hanging window box is designed to hang below the window with the support of brackets. Wooden window boxes are often made out of cedar and add natural beauty to any home's exterior. Plastic inserts are used to line the wooden box to prevent the wood from rotting. Window box dimensions can be adapted to your specific window sizes. A window box should be about as long as the width of your window.

Place the 26 1/2-inch board flat on a work surface. This is the bottom of the planter box.

    • 2

Place one 7 1/2-inch board up against each short end of the bottom piece at a 90-degree angle.

    • 3

Drive four evenly spaced flush-trim wood screws through the end boards into the ends of the bottom board using a screw gun.

    • 4

Align one 28-inch board along the remaining edges of the bottom board to form a rectangular box. The 28-inch pieces should be flush against the outside edges of the short end pieces and bottom board.

Secure the four side pieces to the bottom piece of the window box with flush-trim wood screws placed every 2 inches all around.

    • 6

Turn the box over so that the bottom is facing up. Drill three evenly spaced 3/8-inch holes through the bottom along the center of the length of the board with a drill and a 3/8-inch drill bit. This will allow for drainage when you water your plants.

Position one shelf bracket onto the bottom board at each end with the outside edges flush with the outside edge of the box. Place the remaining bracket in the center of the window box. Fasten the brackets in place with the provided screws and a screw gun.

Hold the window box under the exterior window sill and moulding (or "sill nose") so that the top edge is flush with the bottom of the sill nose. Center the box. Drive the provided shelf bracket screws through the holes in the brackets and into the exterior of the house to secure the box in place.
