How to Make a Silver Polishing Cloth

Sterling silver cleaners can be messy to deal with. Pre-moistened cloths work well, but the commercial preparations are expensive to purchase. By making your own silver polishing cloths you can have the convenience of pre-moistened silver cleaning cloths, but you do not need to worry about harsh chemicals or the added expense. Homemade silver polishing cloths can be washed and reused until the fabric is no longer in decent shape.

Cut pieces of soft cloth to the size you want using scissors. A good size is approximately 5 inches square, because the fabric does not bunch up too much or become awkward to handle. Any soft fabric will work well, such as flannel or old cloth diapers.

Mix 1/2 cup lemon juice with 1 tsp. olive oil in a bowl large enough to hold the cleaning solution and the fabric.

    • 3

Dip the cut fabric square into the olive oil and lemon juice. Leave the fabric in the bowl until the fabric is saturated with the silver cleaner.

    • 4

Wring out the fabric. The cleaner should saturate the cloth but not drip.

    • 5

Fold the saturated fabric squares and place them in a plastic zippered bag to store them. Use the homemade silver cleaning cloths to clean your silver as needed. When the cloths become dirty, wash them in your washing machine with laundry detergent and reapply silver cleaner.
