How to Make a Vmware Session Auto Expire

The VMware ESX Server series is intended for remote connections to low-powered hardware or thin computers. A single system runs multiple virtual machines to which client systems connect. The client systems have minimal hardware requirements since they need only to display the graphical interface and accept input from the user via the keyboard and mouse. To save bandwidth, the connection automatically expires after a certain period of time. Run the configuration program if this time was reset to a high value, or you need to change it to a shorter period.
    • 1

Log in to the ESX system as root, or type "su" at the terminal prompt and press "Enter."

    • 2

Type "vmware-config-mui.pl" and press "Enter." This runs the configuration program again. Be sure there are no connected users before running this command since it will stop the VMware Management Interface and disconnect all users.

    • 3

Press "Enter" to accept the default options at each prompt, or customize as needed.

    • 4

Type the number of minutes at which the session should timeout when prompted. This value determines when the session will automatically expire. This applies only to an inactive session. If the user is logged in and connected to ESX, the connection will not be terminated.

Type the following command to restart the VMware Management Interface:

      /etc/init.d/httpd.vmware start

Clients can now connect to the ESX server.
