The most accurate way to test the water is by using a water test kit that uses liquid reagents. Test strips are not as accurate as the reagent kit. There are several forms of chlorine that are used to sanitize the water in spas. The amount of chemical added to the water depends on the type of chlorine used.

  Test the water in the spa for the chlorine level using a water test kit. Test the water twice to ensure the reading is consistent. Follow the directions on the test kit for testing chlorine.

  Understand that the chlorine level for a spa should test two or three parts per million. The chlorine level should not reach higher than 10 parts per million or lower than one part per million.

  Add chlorine to the water to raise the level if it is too low. There are several types of chlorine that are used in spas and different amounts are added depending on the type. Follow the directions on the type of chlorine you are using for the capacity of your spa and for how much you need to raise the level of chlorine.

  Refrain from adding chlorine for a few days if the level of chlorine is too high. Test the water daily until the level of chlorine is within the optimum range of two to three parts per million.
