How to Pass the Voluntary Employment Test

Many jobs require prospective employees to complete a personality profile as part of the application process. These voluntary employment tests focus on determining basic skills in addition to understanding your personality. Other employers ask applicants to take a physical test to determine your fitness level. Typically, jobs in law enforcement require such a physical examination. These jobs require the stamina to run for an extended period in addition to staying alert for many hours at a time.
  • Mental Tests

    • 1

Ask a friend who works at the company or the person in charge of employment what the test requires. Companies often give only a basic overview of the test and will not tell you any specifics of the test.

    • 2

Take a practice test if possible. You can find personality and skill tests online.

    • 3

Read each question thoroughly when taking the test. Read the answer choices so that you understand them completely.

    • 4

Rule out answers you know are wrong. If you are left with one answer, choose this answer. If you have two answers available, choose the answer that makes more sense.

    • 5

Answer personality questions honestly and go with your first impulse. Read over the question after answering to see if there is a trick to the question.

    • 6

Answer consistently. Tests often reword one question and ask it two or three times to detect faking. If you fake too many answers, you will fail the test. Double-check your answers after you finish the test to avoid answering inconsistently.

    Physical Tests

    • 1

Jog for 30 minutes, three days a week. Most physical tests focus on strength, endurance and stamina. These tests often require a one- or two-mile run.

    • 2

Practice push-ups twice a week. Do as many push-ups as you can, rest for 60 seconds, and do another set of as many push-ups as you can.

    • 3

Practice sit-ups and squats using the same technique as push-ups.

    • 4

Rest for two days before the physical test. This ensures that your body is not fatigued.
