- 1 Determine how many guests can comfortably fit in your home or in your backyard. This will give you a general idea of how many people you can invite.
- 2 Check with your city to see if there are local noise ordinances or if a permit is required to have the reception at home. This will prevent the police from interrupting your special day.
- 3 Hire a caterer or assign dishes to family members. Potlucks and barbecues often work well at home receptions as family and friends are usually familiar with the dishes and know what they like. It also is a good way to save money. The cooks often enjoy the opportunity to help the couple.
- 4 Select a bakery to make and deliver the wedding cake. Be sure to have a table designated for the cake during the reception. The table can be decorated with a white floor length tablecloth and rose pedals scattered on top.
- 5 Book a DJ. Have him visit the location prior to the reception to give you suggestions on the best place to set up his equipment.
- 6 Ask friends and family if you can borrow china and crystal for the big day. This makes for an elegant mismatch of china. An alternative would be to serve guests on paper or Styrofoam dishes.
- 7 Rent needed items. Depending on the couple's budget and the available space, this might include tables, chairs, dishes, a portable potty, dance floor, tent or a generator.
- 8 Tell your neighbors the date and time of the reception. You can even ask them if they would be willing to donate their driveways as parking areas for your guests.
- 9 Decorate your home and yard. Inside, use pillars for the doorway, flowers and candles. Outside decorations can include torches, lanterns and lights. Tulle or sheer fabric can be draped over doorways or unsightly areas.
- 10 Relax and enjoy the day as you greet and mingle with guests.

How to Plan a Home Wedding Reception
Having a home wedding reception often provides a more intimate venue. A home reception can be as casual as a backyard barbecue with family and friends or as formal as an outdoor event with a large tent, band, dancing, covered tables and chairs. Even though it takes time and consideration to plan a home wedding reception, it can be an enjoyable and memorable event for the couple and guests. Depending on the couple's budget, a home reception can save money or cost the same as a large reception hall.
