How to Prevent Rust in Water Heaters

Regular maintenance is necessary to prolong the life of a water heater and keep it operating at maximum efficiency. As water is heated, calcium carbonate builds and rust can accumulate at the bottom of the water tank. These accumulated deposits will eventually interfere with heating the water. Draining and flushing the tank can remove this rust buildup and drastically improve operations.

Removing Sediment from Water Heater

  Turn off power and the water flow to the heater.

  Attach a garden hose to the water heater drain valve.

• 3

  Open the temperature and pressure relief valve and empty as much water as possible.

  Turn the water supply back on and let it run for a few minutes, flushing the drain valve.

  Close the drain valve and the water heater will fill. Turn on the power supply.
