How to Prevent Sinus Problems With a Home Humidifier

Sinus issues can occur as a result of dry air. One way to prevent the dryness is to use a humidifier. Humidifiers release water steam into the air, which adds moisture to what you are breathing in. When your sinuses become too dry, they can become irritated and develop infections. Fortunately, you can attempt to prevent sinus issues from developing by keeping the humidity levels in your home at an adequate level by using a humidifier.

Fill your humidifier reservoir with distilled or de-mineralized water. This type of water reduces the amount of scale buildup and dust release that occurs in the humidifier and steam it omits. Avoid using tap water, as it can cause mineral buildup in your humidifier.

Run your humidifier as often as possible. Depending upon the size of the room and the humidifier, one humidifier per room is adequate. Most people with allergy issues run their humidifiers during the winter season, as the heat in their home can cause the environment to become dry.

Check the humidity levels in your home with a hygrometer. The humidity level should be between 30 and 50 percent. Humidity levels above 60 percent can cause bacteria and fungus to grow in your home, which can make your sinus issues worse if you are allergic to those components. If the humidity levels are too low, run the humidifier more. If they have become too high, decrease your use.

Clean your humidifier often when you are using it. Use a scrub brush to clean the tank and replace sponge filters and belts as needed. Follow the recommendations for cleaning as given by the humidifier's manufacturer, or clean the humidifier once a week.
