Use a base coat of latex paint before spray-painting your Styrofoam object. It will form a protective coating to prevent the spray paint from eating through the Styrofoam.

Coat your Styrofoam object with a rigidizer such as Elasta-Shield or Foam Coat. These products will harden the Styrofoam, making it less susceptible to breaking or cracking.

Keep your Styrofoam objects in a plastic bag when not in use to protect them from moisture and mold damage.

How to Protect Styrofoam
We use Styrofoam for a number of uses, many of them disposable. Styrofoam is fragile; it can break down relatively easily and is subject to denting and cracking. You can protect those Styrofoam objects that you wish to use more than once, such as wig heads and party or holiday props, with a few simple steps.
