How to Purge a Whirlpool System

Purging or flushing out your whirlpool system will prevent bacteria, mold and soap residue from building up in the air jet system. The bacteria can cause health problems, and the mold and soap residue can eventually clog the system and result in a hefty repair bill. You should purge the system at least once a month using common household cleaners.
    • 1

Turn each of the jets in your whirlpool tub fully clockwise. This will prevent the the air induction system from activating and pushing the cleaning solution back out of the system before it can make a complete purge.

    • 2

Fill the tub with warm water until it reaches about 2 inches above the highest jet.

    • 3

Add 2 tsp. of dish detergent to the water.

    • 4

Add 20 oz. of bleach to the water.

    • 5

Run the whirlpool for 5-10 minutes before shutting the jets off and draining the tub.

Scrub the sides with a washcloth if residue remains, then use a pitcher filled with clean water to rinse the sides of the tub.
