How to Quit Collecting Unemployment

Unemployment benefits help millions of people to pay their bills while looking for a new job. Unemployment benefits may be between 50 and 70 percent of what you normally would have made a week at your previous job. This may vary from state to state depending on their unemployment laws and regulations. If while receiving your benefits you find steady work, you will need to stop collecting your benefits.

Start your new job and keep track of the hours you work during the first week. Before you stop your unemployment benefits make sure you get through the first few days of work. You may need to turn in an account of your first wages if the pay period overlaps a claim period.

Stop filing a weekly unemployment claim. In order to be eligible for unemployment benefits you must file a weekly claim. If you stop filing your claim, your benefits will stop and it will be assumed you have found work or some means of supporting yourself.
