How to Read Codes on the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

You can read the codes on your 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee using an On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) scan tool. This tool can be purchased from any auto parts retailer. Sensors in the Cherokee detect malfunctions and send trouble codes to the OBD II computer. The computer then lights up warning or service lights on the instrument panel. The computer will store these codes until you retrieve them with your scan tool. The scan tool can also be used to reset the codes and turn off the service and warning lights after you are finished making repairs.

Find the trapezoidal-shaped diagnostic link connector, which is located to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. Plug the OBD II scanner into this port.

    • 2

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position. Make sure you don't start the engine.

    • 3

Turn on the scanner and wait while it retrieves the codes. On some scanners you must press a command like "Retrieve Codes." In either case, eventually it will display alphanumeric codes on its screen.

    • 4

Write down the codes on a piece of paper. Look up the codes in the scanner's operation manual. This will give you the exact meaning of each code.

    • 5

Unplug the scan tool from the port and turn off the vehicle.
