How to Read a Digital Thermometer

Checking your body temperature helps determine if you are ill. In the past, glass thermometers were used to measure temperature. However, many people now use digital thermometers since the mercury in glass thermometers poses a health risk. Digital thermometers also are quicker at measuring temperature and are easier to read.

      Turn on the thermometer. Most digital thermometers briefly flash the last temperature that was taken when they are turned on.

      Insert the thermometer orally, rectally, under the arm or in the ear, depending on the type of thermometer you are using. Measure temperature according to the directions for your thermometer. It is important to follow the directions so that you achieve an accurate result.

      View the digital display window of your thermometer. The number showing is the temperature. The "F" symbol beside the temperature means "Fahrenheit."

      Compare the temperature with guidelines for normal body temperature, which is 98.6 degrees. If your temperature is 100.4 degrees or more, your body is fighting an infection.
