How to Rebuild Lampshades

A lampshade is a rather simple concept. It is essentially a wire frame with fabric wrapped around it. Over time, the frame can get bent or broken or the fabric can wear, rip or separate from the frame. Or, perhaps you are updating your decor and you want a new look for your old lampshade. If you can sew, you can rebuild a lampshade to make it the exact accessory you want for your lamp.

Cut the fabric away from the lampshade frame. Examine the frame for any bent or broken frame pieces. Use the pliers to straighten and flatten bent frame pieces.

    • 2

Unwrap and straighten the wire coat hanger using the pliers. Measure the length of the broken frame piece. Cut a piece of the wire coat hanger 2 inches longer than the broken frame piece. Use the pliers to shape the wire into place, leaving 1 inch of overlap where the wire meets the frame. Bend the ends around the frame to join it in place. Make sure the bent ends are to the inside of the frame so they don't create dimpling in the new lampshade fabric.

Wrap cotton tape around each wire comprising the frame, making sure that it is tightly wound and holding securely.

    • 4

Measure the circumference of the widest part of the lampshade and add 2 inches to the measurement. Picture where the lampshade material will be stretched between the top ring of the frame and the bottom ring of the frame and measure that distance. Add 2 inches to the measurement. Cut the new lampshade fabric to these measurements.

    • 5

Baste stitch the bottom and top edges of the fabric. Fold the material and sew the edges together with a 1-inch hem. Turn the material inside out and you should have a cylinder of fabric with the print on the outside.

    • 6

Slide the fabric over the frame. Pull the basting stitch at the bottom so that the fabric gathers around the bottom ring. Repeat for the top ring. Wrapping the fabric around the bottom ring to the inside of the shade, stitch the fabric to the cotton tape on the frame. Make sure you have enough "give" in the fabric at the top to wrap it around and to the inside of the top ring. Complete the stitching, keeping the fabric snug and ruched as you go.
