How to Recover a Scratched Disk

Media disks are a much better quality media than outdated cassette tapes. They enable you to watch digital movies and listen to digital sound. From time to time, your disks will get scratched due to DVD players or CD players skipping, improper care, mishandling and a multitude of other factors. Polishing scratched disks is the best way to recover them and make them playable again.
  • Polish scratched disk

    • 1

Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the scratched disk and rub around the disk perimeter. Take a washcloth and start rubbing the paste around the disc for about 20 minutes.

    • 2

Wash the disc in lukewarm water to rinse off the toothpaste. Wipe the disk from the inside edges to the outer edges in straight lines.

    • 3

Try the disc to see if it will play. If it does not play, you will need to polish the disk more.

    • 4

Put another pea-sized amount of toothpaste on your disk and rub with a washcloth in a perimeter motion again. Rub the disk for one hour this time.

    • 5

Rinse the disk in lukewarm water and once again wipe the disk in a straight line from the inside edge to the outside edge.

    • 6

Place the disk in your media player to test it again. Your disk should now be playable and recovered.
