How to Recycle HP Toner

When the toner cartridge in your HP laser printer starts to run dry, you will notice a marked decrease in the quality of your printouts. When you see faded print, dropouts, spots and other problems, you know it is time to install a new toner cartridge. But you should not simply throw that empty toner cartridge away, since the chemicals inside can be harmful to the environment. Fortunately, HP makes it easy for its customers to do the right thing and recycle their toner cartridges.

  Remove the used toner cartridge from the printer, and replace it with the new cartridge. Keep the box the new cartridge came in to ship the old one back for recycling.

  Check the box the new toner came in, and look for a prepaid shipping label. Many replacement toner cartridges come with a prepaid shipping label that printer owners can use to return their old cartridges.

  Place the used toner cartridge in the black plastic bag that the new toner cartridge came in. Seal the bag with packing tape. If you do not have the plastic bag, you can seal the cartridge in plastic wrap instead.

  Use the packing materials that came with the new cartridge, and use them to secure the old toner cartridge in the box. Seal the box with packing tape, and attach the shipping label. Drop the box off at your closest UPS location.

  Log on to the HP recycling center website (See Resources) if there was no shipping label with the replacement cartridge. Enter your name, company name if applicable and address in the form, then print the shipping label on your printer. Tape the shipping label to the box, and drop the used cartridge off at your nearest UPS shipping location.
