How to Recycle Scrap Metal in St. Louis

The St. Louis County recycling program does not allow for miscellaneous metals to be put out for curbside recycling. St. Louis has created special waste-recycling programs for solid wastes such as scrap metal. Those who wish to recycle these items should sort their scrap metal prior to recycling and, if possible, reuse it.

Call the St. Louis County Environmental Services Department Solid Waste Division to get the address of an approved solid waste site where you can take your scrap metal to be recycled for free.

Sort through all your recyclable materials and separate out all the scrap metal. As much as possible, flatten the scrap metal while wearing protective gloves so that you can easily carry the metal to the solid waste site. This is relatively easy to do with aluminum cans and tinfoil items.

Carefully place the scrap metal onto a tarp in the trunk of your car or the back of a truck. Fold the tarp around the metal so that the metal doesn't scratch your vehicle. Drop off the metal to the solid waste site closest to you.
