How to Refill HP 74/75 Cartridges

HP 74/75 black/tricolor ink cartridges are used in many Hewlett-Packard printers, including the Officejet J6480, Photosmart C4480 all-in-one printers, Deskjet D4360, Deskjet D4260 and some Deskjet and Photosmart photo printers. The refill kits have enough ink to refill the ink cartridges for two to eight times, depending on the type of refill kit. The HP 74 cartridge prints up to 200 pages and the HP 75 prints up to 170 pages.

Place paper towel on a table. Remove the ink cartridge from the printer carriage and place it on the paper towel. Remove the label from the cartridge.

    • 2

Remove the syringe and bottle of ink from the refill kit. Insert the syringe needle into the bottle of ink. Draw out 20 milliliters of ink by pulling up on the plunger.

    • 3

Place the tip of the needle into any of the vent holes on the cartridge as far as it will go without force. Press the syringe plunger to inject the ink slowly. If any ink bubbles out of the vent hole, stop filling and wipe with paper towel. Cartridges that are not empty will not take the full amount of ink.

Tape the cartridge where the label was. Place the filled HP 74 ink cartridge in the printer and run two to three test pages using any document.

Lay down paper towel. Remove the ink cartridge from the printer and place it on the towel. Remove the label from the color ink cartridge to reveal the refill holes. Remove the supplies from the kit. There are three syringes and bottles of cyan, magenta and yellow ink.

    • 2

Insert one syringe into the cyan ink bottle. Pull up the plunger to draw 6 milliliters of ink into the syringe. Repeat this step using syringes for the magenta and yellow ink.

    • 3

Insert the tip of the first needle into the corresponding ink color. Slowly push down on the syringe plunger to inject the ink into the HP 75 cartridge. If the ink bubbles out of the vent hole, stop filling and wipe with paper towel. Cartridges that are not empty will not take the full amount of ink. Repeat this step to fill the other two colors. Hint: Yellow is at the top center, magenta is at the bottom left and cyan is at the bottom right.
