How to Refill Toner on an HP 15A

The HP 15A is a black toner cartridge used in HP's line of laser printers. Since replacing this toner cartridge completely is expensive, some users simply replace the toner within the old cartridge. Doing so is a rather straightforward process that you can complete with the proper replacement toner and a standard funnel. Once refilled, you can expect the HP 15A to perform as well as a brand-new cartridge.
    • 1

Remove the empty HP 15A toner cartridge from your laser printer, and situate it onto a clear workspace protected with newspapers or paper towels.

    • 2

Turn the cartridge so that it is oriented vertically and the HP 15A label reads from the bottom to the top of the cartridge.

    • 3

Locate the screw on the top end of the cartridge, and remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Pull off the plastic cover with your hands or use pliers to help remove the cover.

    • 5

Place the tip of a funnel into the open refilling hole on the top end of the cartridge.

    • 6

Pour the replacement black printer toner into funnel to fill the HP 15A.

    • 7

Take the funnel out of the refilling hole, and wipe any excess toner from the mouth of the refilling hole.

    • 8

Secure the plastic cover over the refilling hole with the single screw.

    • 9

Return the HP 15A to the laser printer, and wait eight hours for the ink to settle. The toner cartridge will be ready for use after you run one to three cleaning cycles on the printer.
