How to Register a Boat Trailer

Not all states require the owners of boat trailers to register their boat trailers. For those that do, the process is similar to registering your personal vehicle. Each state that requires the registration of boat trailers has its own process, but the process doesn't vary much. To ensure you know what's required of you and your boat trailer in your state, contact your local motor vehicle department or tax collector's office for the specifics.

Provide the clerk at the motor vehicle department or tax collector's office with your photo identification and proof of ownership of the trailer. Additional information may be required by your state.

Wait while your application is processed and your title and registration are completed. Pay the fee -- payment methods and fees vary by state -- and your registration is mailed to you within 30 days of your application.
