Lift the Silverado using the jack. Lower the truck onto four jack stands so that all four wheels are off the ground. Make sure you have enough clearance to fit underneath the vehicle. Put the transmission into neutral.
- 2
Place the drain pan underneath the connection between the driveline and the transmission. Unbolt the straps connecting the axle to the driveline using an open-end wrench. If you have an extra-cab or a crew-cab pickup, unbolt the carrier bearing in the middle of the driveline using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

Pry the driveline out of the rear axle using the 24-inch pry bar. Pull the driveline out of the transmission with both hands. Remove it from the underside of the Silverado.

How to Remove a 2001 Chevy Silverado Driveline
The engine of a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado is connected to the transmission, which turns the driveline connected to the rear axle. This driveline has universal joints on both ends, which allow the driveline to rotate while simultaneously moving up and down with the suspension. These universal joints can wear down over time, causing rattling and potentially a failure in the driveline. To fix the problem, the driveline has to be removed from the vehicle, which should take you about 30 minutes to do.
