How to Remove Cruiser Motorcycle Hand Grips

A cruiser motorcycle's hand grips are intended to provide the maximum amount of grip on the handlebars, while shielding the rider from vibration transmitted through the frame by the motor. Most grips are made from rubber or foam that will eventually deteriorate as the miles pile on. But, before a new set of grips can be installed, the old grips have to come off. Some cruisers use a plain rubber grip, while others may have a metal cap at the grip's end. Removing either is something you can do in just a few minutes.

Remove the end cap from the hand grip, if any, either by unscrewing it from the grip or using an Allen wrench to remove the cap's set screws.

Cut the grip in half lengthwise, using a razor blade. Peel the grip off the handlebar or throttle tube.

Clean the handlebar or throttle tube with an adhesive-removing spray cleaner and allow it to soak for one minute. Remove the old adhesive remnants with 200-grit sandpaper, then wipe dry with a shop towel.
