How to Remove a Large Tire From the Rim

Tire maintenance is critical to a car's general health. Checking tires for air pressure, for a flat and for damages are just some of the ways to ensure that your tires will work safely and properly. Eventually tires will wear out and need to be replaced. Tires may also become damaged and require replacement. Although there are shops that can easily remove the tire from the rim, removing an old or damaged tire can be done with the help of an able-bodied assistant and the right tools.

  Place the tire on the ground, with the outer rim facing upward. Remove the tire's valve stem cap.

  Insert the valve stem removal tool into the tire's valve stem. Turn the tool counterclockwise. Air from the tire will be released through it.

  Wedge the large flat-head screwdriver between the tire and the rim to break the seal holding the tire.

  Wedge the large pry bar between the tire and the rim while your assistant stands on top of the wheel. Pry out the tire over the top of the rim using the wheel's rim as leverage.

  Apply as much hard grease as necessary to the surface of the wheel's rim. This will aid you in prying out the tire from the rim. Carefully work your way around the outside of the wheel's rim until one side of the tire is removed from the rim.

  Wedge the pry bar again between the wheel's outer rim and the side of the tire that is still inside the wheel. Your assistant should be lifting the tire up so that its remaining side is close to the wheel's outer rim.

  Repeat the procedure in Step 5 around the circumference to completely remove the tire from the rim.
