How to Remove an Odor From a Swamp Cooler

Swamp coolers, or evaporative coolers, are an alternative to a traditional air conditioner. The cooler works by drawing air across water-filled pads and filters, then sending the cooled air into the home through a series of ducts. Evaporative coolers are not used in humid climates because the cooler increases humidity as it draws air across the water. Odors in swamp coolers are caused when mold and bacteria begin to grow in the filters, pads and water reservoir. Prevent odors by maintaining your swamp cooler regularly.

  Unplug the evaporative cooler before you service it.

  Drain the evaporative cooler's sump pump completely to remove sediment and mineral deposits.

  Clean the empty reservoir with mild soap and water.

  Remove the pads and filters. Replace them if necessary. You can clean some types of pads and filters with soap and water, then reuse them. Check your owner's manual to be certain whether your pads and filters can be cleaned or if they must be replaced.

  Replace the filters and pads and add water according to the instructions in your owner's manual.
