How to Remove Olive Oil Smell From Plastic Containers

Olive oil has a distinct smell that lingers behind on a number of surfaces, including plastic containers. After emptying the container, many times you are left with an olive oil odor. You try to scrub the container out with a dish rag and some warm, soapy water but the smell of the olive oil is still present, and often greasy residue as well. By incorporating a low-cost cleaning ingredient into your routine you can get rid of both the residue and the smell.
    • 1

Fill the kitchen sink with about 2 quarts hot water, 1 tbsp. dish soap and 1/4 cup white vinegar.

    • 2

Place the plastic container into the hot water, submerge it and let the container soak for about 10 minutes. This will give the vinegar time to deodorize the container and loosen the oil residue.

    • 3

Scrub the container with a dish rag, or use a nylon scrubbing pad if the oil residue is thick.

    • 4

Rinse the container with warm water after cleaning.
