Remove the wheel from the car. Use a hose with a spray nozzle to rinse off the wheel. Dry the wheel with a rag. Let it air-dry for a few minutes to make sure no moisture remains.
- 2
Apply masking tape to any parts of the wheel you don't want damaged or cleaned, such as the wheel cap.
- 3
Spray multiple smooth, even coats of oven cleaner over the surface of the wheel. Use the rag to wipe off any oven spray that gets on the tire.
- 4
Start scrubbing the wheel with a wire brush once the oven cleaner begins to bubble. This typically occurs approximately 10 minutes after you initially apply it. Scrub until the oxidation is gone.
- 5
Wipe off the wheel with the rag to remove any excess oven cleaner. Spray the surface with water to get rid of any leftover cleaner. Dry the surface of the wheel with a new rag.
- 6
Use the last rag to apply a thin coat of automotive polish or wax paste. Let the wax dry and rub the wheel down, buffing the surface.

How to Remove Oxidation From a Cast Aluminum Wheel
If your cast aluminum wheels are looking a little worse for wear because of oxidation buildup, you can make them look like new by removing the oxidation. Oxidation is what happens when oxygen reacts with another element, such as metal. Over time, oxidation builds up, causing cast aluminum and other metals to take on a tarnished look. On cast aluminum, oxidation typically adds a gray to black color to the surface of the metal.
