How to Remove Scratches From a Fiberglass Bath

Common bathtubs are made from a long-lasting and durable material called fiberglass. This fiberglass material gets coated with a protective gel layer during the bathtub manufacturing process. Years of use and cleaning with harsh chemicals can cause this protective layer to wear and fade off, which may lead to scratches. While these scratches make the bathtub appear unsightly and dirty, they come out easily using a few simple products.
    • 1

Fill a bucket with warm running water. Add three to four drops of mild detergent into the water and stir with a wooden spoon until soapy.

    • 2

Saturate a soft-bristled scrub brush in the warm, soapy water. Clean the bathtub with the brush to remove any dirt, soap scum or grime.

    • 3

Rinse the bathtub with clean water to remove all soap residues. Dry the bathtub with a microfiber cloth.

    • 4

Squeeze a small, quarter-sized dab of white water-based automobile polishing compound onto a clean, soft cloth. Rub the white polishing compound over the scratched fiberglass in small, circular motions. Continue rubbing the compound into the fiberglass scratches until they disappear from the bathtub.

Wipe the white automobile polishing haze away from the bathtub using a clean, dry cloth. Allow the polishing compound to dry on the fiberglass bathtub as indicated on the package label.

Apply an even layer of fiberglass wax to the bathtub using a foam applicator, specifically in the areas where you performed the scratch repair. You can find fiberglass wax in most marine or boat supply stores. Refer to fiberglass wax instructions for complete application techniques since different brands may have different methods of use.

Allow the fiberglass wax to dry on the bathtub for the stated amount of time until a white haze forms. Use a soft, clean cloth to buff the wax on the fiberglass tub until you produce a pronounced shine.
