How to Remove the Shifter Knob on a Chevrolet

Shifter knobs are among the most customizable parts on the interior of a vehicle. Replacements can consist of OEM rebuilds to personalized knobs with a variety of designs. Whether replacing a stock shift knob on your Chevrolet with an aftermarket knob, or replacing a broken or damaged knob with an OEM part, removing this component in most vehicles is simple and requires only basic tools.

  Lock the parking brake on your Chevrolet and pull the shifter knob into the setting that is the closest to the rear of the vehicle. This will give you a better angle to access the knob.

  Locate the mounting shaft on the back of the knob. This shaft points diagonally toward the rear of the vehicle.

  Slide a Phillips screwdriver into the mounting shaft. Remove the screw at the end of the shaft. Be careful not to strip this screw, as you will have to use it with any replacement part you purchase.

  Twist the knob counter-clockwise to remove it off the shifter assembly. If the knob is bound up, you may have to use some force to start it turning.

  Remove the metal washer at the bottom of the knob assembly. A replacement for this part will be included with an OEM or aftermarket knob kit.
