How to Repair an EGR Valve on a Ford Taurus

The Ford Taurus' EGR, or exhaust gas recirculation system, is responsible for reducing the Taurus' exhaust emissions. It also helps to reduce the engine's detonation and any "ping" type noise coming from it, also known as pinging. It does this by reducing the combustion temperature. The EGR system kicks in during cruising and deceleration. If your EGR valve is faulty, you can replace it in just a few steps.

  Remove the vacuum that goes into the EGR valve by pulling it. The EGR valve is on the upper intake manifold.

  Remove the nuts and bolts that hold the EGR pipe. This pipe runs to the EGR valve and connects it to the intake manifold. To remove the bolts, turn them counterclockwise with a wrench.

  Remove hoses that lead into the small tubes of the pipe. The pipe will then pull away from the manifold. Pull the EGR valve off of manifold. Throw the valve and surrounding gasket away and clean the surrounding area, or gasket surface, with a gasket scraper. The scraper will remove all residue from the exhaust.

  Place the new valve and gasket back into place. Put the EGR pipe back into the valve and the other end into the exhaust manifold. Connect all small hoses back into the EGR pipe by pushing them back in. Tighten all nuts and bolts by turning them clockwise with a wrench. Push the vacuum hose back over the valve vacuum fitting.
