How to Repair the Glass on an iTouch

The iTouch, or iPod Touch, is a small music and video playing device that uses a glass touch screen called a digitizer. The digitizer sends signals when touched to the logic board, which then sends signals to the operating system to perform an action. The digitizer does not respond correctly when cracked, even if there is video playing on the screen. Replacement glass iPod touch screens are now widely available for home repairs. Always work in as static free an environment as possible when repairing an iPod touch to prevent damaging the circuitry inside.

Set down an electrostatic discharge (ESD) mat to create a static free surface for working on your iPod. Attach the mat to a wrist band using the cord that came with the mat to ground your body to the mat.

    • 2

Touch a metal surface before opening the iPod touch to release any built-up static.

    • 3

Run your razor blade along the top of the device, between the back casing and the screen. Lift up the end of the screen and slide your nylon black stick underneath it. Do not force the screen, since this may cause it to crack again, spraying glass inside the device.

Run the razor blade along the rest of the screen and slowly work the screen out of the casing using your black stick.

    • 5

Slowly pull up on the screen. Release the cable that goes from the screen to the logic board of the device by pulling up on the cable at the connector on the logic board using your nylon black stick. Do not touch it with your hand.

Peel off the protective plastic on your new screen and attach the cable to the logic board. Push down on the screen to fit it into the casing. Test the device.
