How to Repair the Optical Drive on a DVD-RAM in a Computer

The DVD-RAM drive is an integral part of any laptop or desktop computer. If the optical drive stops working, you will suddenly be unable to install software from a CD, play your songs or watch your movies. Getting to the source of a problem with the DVD-RAM drive means using a step-by-step process. A number of different issues can cause the problem.

Restart your computer and press the "eject" button on the DVD-RAM drive as the computer is starting up. Often restarting the computer will be enough to get a stuck disk out of the drive and allow it to operate normally again.

Unbend a paper clip and insert it into the bypass hole in the DVD-RAM drive. This bypass hole is located near the "eject" button. Insert the paper clip into the bypass hole and push it until the drive starts to spin. Press the paper clip in further to force the drive to pop open. Remove the disk and replace it with one you know works.

Insert a laser lens cleaner into the DVD-RAM drive and run the cleaning program several times. Over time, dirt can accumulate on the drive and cause the laser lens to track incorrectly.

Remove the cover of the computer if you still do not get a response from the DVD-RAM drive. Take the retaining screws out of the back of the computer, then remove the cover and locate the DVD-RAM drive inside the case.

Check the power connection on the back of the DVD-RAM drive and make sure it is fully seated. These power connections can come loose over time and cause the drive to lose power.
