How to Repair a Pool Pump Filter

The pool pump's main purpose is to move water throughout the pool in a circular fashion, keeping algae from forming and chlorine chemicals from condensing. The pool water will eventually move through the pool pump filter, which removes debris and other impurities from the pool water. When a filter is damaged or broken, pool circulation may be inhibited, and debris may build up in the water. Filters should be checked at the beginning of the season for any malfunctions.

Inspect all the pool hoses that go to the pump and filters and check for leaks. Tighten the hoses if any leaks are apparent. Loose hoses reduce the efficiency of the filters.

Remove the pool filter from the pump if the pressure gauge is high, and rinse out the filter according to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Backwash the pump according to the pump instructions.

Inspect the pool pump impeller behind the filter basket. Turn off the pump and remove the lid and basket to get to the impeller. Inspect it to see if it is bent or has any debris lodged near it. Remove the debris and replace the impeller if necessary.
