How to Repair Wooden Oars

Wooden oars can become cracked and damaged with regular use, requiring repairs before the owner can using them again. Epoxies are strong adhesives that bond old and new materials together and form a weather-tight seal against the elements. Epoxy can be used to repair cracks and chips in the wooden oar blade, but replacing a severely cracked oar is often the only option if repeated repair attempts fail.

  Cut a rectangular shape in the oar blade using a jigsaw that is one-quarter inch wider than the crack or chip.

  Whittle, shape, and sand a piece of replacement hardwood to fit in the rectangular hole in the oar.

  Glue the replacement wood in place with the epoxy.

  Wrap the oar blade with fiberglass tape, then coat it with epoxy resin.
