How to Replace a Fan Clutch in a 1996 Jeep 4.0L

The mechanical, engine-driven cooling fan on the 1996 Jeep Cherokee uses a viscous fluid clutch mechanism. The clutch allows the fan to rotate differently depending on the cooling needs of the engine. When the engine is cool, the fan can turn slower than the engine and thus conserve fuel. As engine temperature increases, so does the fan speed enabling the fan to provide greater engine cooling when needed. A seized fan clutch may cause excessive fuel consumption and slow engine warm-up. A fan clutch that has lost fluid and doesn't engage may cause engine overheating. Fan clutch replacement does not require any specialized tools.
  • Remove Fan and Clutch Assembly

    • 1

Remove the mounting screws from the fan shroud, using the appropriate style and size of screwdriver. Lift the fan shroud slightly upwards and then push it rearward over the fan.

    • 2

Remove the fan-clutch-to-pulley mounting bolts, using the appropriate sized box-end wrench.

    • 3

Lift the fan and clutch assembly from the vehicle. Remove the fan-to-clutch bolts, and separate the fan from the clutch.

    Install New Fan Clutch

    • 1

Attach the new fan clutch to the fan and tighten the bolts securely.

    • 2

Position the fan and clutch assembly in the vehicle and install the clutch-to-pulley bolts. Tighten bolts securely.

    • 3

Slide the fan shroud forward into position. Install the shroud mounting screws and tighten securely.
