How to Replace the Foam on a Motorcycle Seat

Motorcycle foam seats are sometimes uncomfortable for long rides and often suffer from damage to their delicate foam. You can remove and replace the foam on a motorcycle seat instead of buying a replacement seat. Choose a foam most comfortable to you. Seats are typically made of closed-cell foam, rebond foam or neoprene foam. Motorcycle seats often have a layer of a softer, top foam. Typically, this top layer is made of polyurethane cushioning foam.
    • 1

Remove the motorcycle seat from the bike.

    • 2

Turn the seat upside-down. Pry the staples that attach the seat cover to the seat using the flathead screwdriver. Set the seat cover, and the layer of plastic beneath it, aside. Remove the foam from the seat, and set it on a flat surface.

    • 3

Place the old foam on top of the new foam. Trace the dimensions of the old foam onto the new foam. If the foam will not lie straight, trace the dimensions of the seat cover onto the new foam. Trace this shape onto both layers of foam.

Cut out the foam using a razor knife.

    • 5

Turn the seat right-side up, and place the bottom, thicker layer of foam on the seat.

    • 6

Place the top layer of foam on top of this bottom layer.

    • 7

Pull the plastic cover over the new foam. Place the seat cover on top of the seat, and pull it tight so the foam slightly depresses.

    • 8

Turn the seat over, and staple the seat cover to the bottom of the motorcycle seat. Use at least one staple for each corner and edge of the motorcycle seat.
