How to Replace Kitchen Aerator Washers

The aerator is the piece screwed into the end of your kitchen sink's faucet. Water is mixed with air when it passes through the aerator's screens. Aerating the water helps to produce a smooth water flow and reduces splashing. You should replace the washers in the aerator when unclogging screens, especially if they are worn or damaged. Repairing a kitchen aerator with replacement washers usually only takes a few minutes.

Unscrew the aerator from the end of the faucet with your hand by turning it counter-clockwise. Remove aerators that are hard to get off by wrapping the aerator with masking tape and unscrewing it with groove-joint pliers. Set the aerator on a towel.

Flush out debris in the faucet by turning the faucet on and off a few times once the aerator is removed.

Disassemble the aerator with your hands or a small screwdriver. Take note of the placement of each piece. Inspect the washer and take it to a plumbing supply store to buy a replacement.

Clean the screens with a toothbrush and a straight pin. Rinse the screens underwater to clear away all debris.

Reassemble the pieces in the order that was noted. Make sure to replace the old washer with the replacement. Screw the aerator back into the end of the faucet by turning it clockwise with your hand.
