How to Reset an HP 94 Color Cartridge

HP printers often have built-in functions that allow the printer to recognize when the ink cartridge is low. In order to recognize the ink cartridge level, the printer must read information from a chip that is built into the cartridge. When you refill an HP cartridge with a chip, such as an HP 94 color cartridge, instead of buying a new cartridge, the chip may fail to show a proper ink reading, making it impossible for the printer to read the ink level in the cartridge. You can fix this problem by resetting the cartridge chip.

  Place the HP 94 cartridge that you refilled, or that the printer cannot read, into the printer. When you place the cartridge in the printer, the printer asks if you would like print a test page. Click "Yes" to print the test page with the cartridge.

  Take the refilled cartridge out of the printer and set it aside, making sure the bottom contacts on the cartridge do not touch any surface. Put a second HP 94 cartridge into the HP printer. Again, when you are asked if you want to print the test page, click "Yes" and allow the page to print.

  Remove the second HP 94 cartridge from the printer and put the third HP 94 cartridge into the printer. Click "Yes" on the message that appears to print a test page with the third cartridge. Once the test page prints, remove the third cartridge from the printer.

  Return the first cartridge that the printer couldn't read back into the printer. Print the test page. The HP printer should recognize the HP 94 cartridge as a new cartridge and the ink level on the printer should reset.
