How to Reset the "Maintenance Required" Light on a 1985 Dodge Truck With a 318 V8

The 1985 Dodge Ram truck with a 318-cubic-inch V8 engine has a maintenance tracking system as part of the internal computer. The "Maintenance Required" light illuminates on the dash, and must be reset after the work has been done. Resetting the maintenance light allows the system to accurately track when the next maintenance is required. The computer code can only be reset using an OBD code reader.

      Turn the ignition switch to "OFF."

      Plug the connector of the OBD reader into the port under the steering column.

      Turn the ignition switch to "ON" without starting the engine.

      Look up the code that is displayed on the OBD reader in the instructions that came with the reader.

      Press the button on the OBD reader that the instruction manual indicates will clear the code that was displayed.

      Turn the ignition switch to "OFF." Disconnect the reader.
