How to Retrieve a Disc From Inside a Laptop

Unfortunately a stuck disc in a laptop is an all too common occurrence. This results when the disc drive becomes unseated in the housing. The good news is that there are a couple ways to get a disc out of a stubborn drive. There's no need to panic because you don't need to open up your entire computer or deal with many components. And many times getting a stuck disc out only takes a moment.
    • 1

Press the "Eject" button on the side of your laptop or select "Eject" from the menu of your DVD/CD player program. If the disc tray doesn't eject proceed to the next step.

    • 2

Unbend the leg of a paperclip so it is sticking straight out. Locate the manual eject button on the side of your computer. It will be a small circular hole near the disc tray cover.

    • 3

Insert the tip of your paperclip into the hole until it can't go any further. You will hear a click sound and the disc tray will pop slightly out of drive.

    • 4

Grip the disc tray by its end and pull it gently out until it can't go any further. Then simply remove the disc. If the reset button doesn't eject the tray then proceed to the next step.

    • 5

Turn off the computer, close your laptop display and turn the computer upside down. Locate the screws which hold the disc drive in place. The will be near the end of the drive. Consult your user guide if you have problems locating the screws.

    • 6

Remove all screws holding the disc drive in place and set them aside.

    • 7

Grip the disc drive at the side of the computer and pull the whole drive out of the laptop.

    • 8

Remove all screws on the drive housing and then open up the housing to expose the disc inside. Remove it.
