How to Retrieve a Lost Windows Logon Password

If you forget your Windows password, you are unable to view it. This is a security risk, so Windows encrypts all passwords saved on the computer. However, you can manage your user account from the administrator account. You reset your password to return access to the account after you forget the previous password. The administrator account in Windows can change any password on the computer.

      Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." Type "user accounts" in the search text box on the top-right. Press "Enter" to list some utilities. Click the "User Accounts" link.

      Click "Manage another account" in the list of options. Click "Change Password" to open a password configuration window.

      Type the password in the first text box, and type the same password in the "Confirmation" text box. Click the "Change Password' button to confirm your changes. You can now log out and log in to the computer with your new password.
