How to Run Scan Disk in Safe Mode

Scandisk is a Windows utility that allows PC users to check and repair file system errors on a given drive. Performing Scandisk in safe mode will eliminate any interruptions from computer applications that are running or might open on the computer during the scanning process. PC users can access the Scandisk utility by selecting a drive to scan in "My Computer."

  Restart the computer and press and hold the "F8" key as soon as it begins to reboot. When the Windows prompt menu appears, highlight the "Safe Mode" option and press the "Enter" button on the keyboard.

  Go to "Start" and click on "My Computer."

  Right-click the drive you want to scan and select "Properties."

  Click on the "Tools" tab. Next, click on the "Check Now" button, which is located in the "Error-checking" section. The "Scandisk" dialog box will appear on the screen.

  Check the box next to the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" option. You can also have Windows fix system errors by checking the box next to "Automatically fix file system errors."

  Click the "Start" button to begin the Scandisk process. Depending on your PC, the process can take several minutes to complete.
