How to Set Up the IP for an RCA Cable Modem

IP addresses, for the most part, come in two formats: dynamic, or DHCP, and static. Static IP addresses are assigned to an Internet modem or other networking device, and the device uses that exact same IP to go online every time. Devices on a DHCP protocol request an IP address from an Internet service provider's network every time they come online. Therefore, DHCP modems may use a slightly different IP address every time they access the Internet since they just grab the first available IP off of the stack. If you have an RCA cable modem and wish to set it up for IP connectivity, you can do so using just a few simple steps.

Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to set up your IP settings for your Internet service. Commonly, providers use DHCP IPs by default and only use statics if you request one, but this varies from provider to provider. Some applications, such as virtual private networks, require a static IP address. Make a determination as to whether you need a dynamic or static IP on your Internet service and specify this to the salesperson at your ISP so that he can assign it to your Internet account.

Connect the coaxial cable from the wall cable outlet to the coaxial input on the RCA modem. Screw on the coaxial connector until it is just hand-tight. Whether you use a static or dynamic IP, all IP information is delivered via this coaxial connection, so you must have this connected before proceeding.

Attach the modem's AC power adapter from the AC connection on the modem to an electrical source. The modem will now being its boot cycle and attempt to connect to your ISP's network and request IP information. After the modem is fully booted and you are able to pull up multiple Web pages with no error, the modem has successfully acquired an IP from the ISP's network and is now using it to browse the Internet.
