How to Stop a Ford Seat Belt Ringer

Ford vehicles are equipped with a belt minder or seat belt ringer that goes off until the seat belt is buckled. It has a flashing light and a chiming noise to alert the driver. While its purpose is safety, the chiming noise and the light going off every few seconds can get annoying. You can stop the ringer temporarily or permanently. When permanently turning off the ringer system, always close the doors and have the car in the "Park" position to avoid accidentally rolling while working on the system.
  • Permanent Turnoff

    • 1

Turn the ignition to "On" but do not turn completely to "Start." Allow the alarm to start. Depending on the car, it should take about one minute or so before the alarm starts up.

    • 2

Buckle the safety belt and then unbuckle it again three times. This must be done as quickly as you can. The belt should be unbuckled at the end of this process.

    • 3

Turn on the headlights and then turn them off again.

    • 4

Repeat the buckle and unbuckle process three more times, again ending up with the belt unbuckled.

    • 5

Wait for the safety belt warning light to turn off. After the second buckle and unbuckle procedure, the light will come on for a few seconds. Immediately after it turns off, buckle and then unbuckle the belt one time.

    • 6

Watch for the confirmation. When deactivated, the light will flash 12 times in a three-second period.

    Temporary Turnoff

    • 1

Start the car. Turn the car fully to the "Start" position so the ignition starts up.

    • 2

Buckle the seat belt. This tells the car that the chime is no longer necessary because the belt is already buckled.

    • 3

Unbuckle the seat belt. The light and chime will not start up again until the ignition is turned off and the car is restarted. This is a temporary way to stop the seat belt ringer.
