How to Sync Palm Pilot Without Admin Rights

The PalmPilot is a PDA that helps users organize addresses, contacts and other files, much of which requires syncing with a computer and Palm software. Administrator rights on a computer are designed to allow only the owner to make changes or alter settings to the PC, and you need to be an administrator in order to install and use Palm's HotSync software. While its purpose is to protect the user's personal data, admin rights settings can become an inconvenience for those who share computer access and need to sync their PalmPilot, but a user can be granted temporary administrator access.

Ask the person with administrator rights for permission to use the computer. The administrator can grant you temporary administrator rights through the computer's control panel.

    • 2

Select your name, underneath "Administrator." Click "Change Account Type." Set to "Standard User." This means that other users can make changes to the computer without needing administrator rights.

    • 3

Download the Palm Desktop Manager and HotSync software (see Resources). Save the file to your desktop. Follow the installation wizard for proper installation. Restart your computer.

    • 4

Insert the data cable to your PalmPilot's input jack, located on the bottom. Attach the other end to your computer's USB port. On a desktop computer, this would be on the front or back of the tower. On a laptop, this would be to the left or right of the keyboard.

Double click the Palm Desktop Manager and HotSync software. Click "Options" to start the process. Select the calendars, memos, tasks or files you want to synchronize to your device. Click "Next" to continue.

    • 6

Click "Finish" to start the synchronization process. Verify the synchronization options you made by clicking "OK." Wait for the process to complete.

    • 7

Allow the administrator to remove the temporary administrator rights on the computer.
