How to Test Velcro

Velcro is a brand name for a special type of fastener used to secure items in place. One side of a Velcro fastener (sometimes called Velcro tape) is rough to the touch and contains a set of hooks. The other side is smoother and contains a set of loops that catch into the hooks when you place the two sides together. Velcro is commonly used for securing book bags, clothing and even shoes. If the Velcro is old, it's a smart idea to quickly test the fastener before use.
    • 1

Press each side of the Velcro fastener together and then attempt to pull them apart again. Listen closely as you do this simple test a few times---you should be able to hear the hooks and loops pulling away from each other. You should also feel resistance when you attempt to pull them apart.

Examine the hooks and loops if you do not experience resistance and listen to the sound they make when you separate the Velcro tape. Look to see if either of the sides contain dirt or small pieces of fabric that could affect their ability to fasten properly.

Clean each side of the fasteners with a hair brush. Use brisk, short strokes to remove debris from the hooked side and bring up the nap of the soft side to increase their ability to fasten.

Press the Velcro pieces back together and repeat the test from Step 1 to ensure that they stay firmly in place.
