How to Troubleshoot a Product Key for an HP Laptop

Product keys are unique combinations of letters and numbers that are used to authorize and validate a legitimate copy of software. In the case of HP laptops, the product keys are often linked to software that came with the laptop or was purchased to function with the laptop. Examples include the Windows operating system on the HP and bundled software such as Microsoft Office. Entering a product key with just one digit or letter incorrect can lead to the computer failing to authorize the software that matches the key.

Verify that you are in fact entering the product key and not the software serial number or other code. The product key is usually on a yellow or holographic sticker and has a small "key" icon next to the product key. In addition, Microsoft product keys often have letters and numbers instead of just numbers.

Verify that your HP keyboard's "caps lock" and "num lock" buttons are not enabled. Press each key once; the light above or on these keys should be off.

Re-enter the product key paying special attention to the order of the digits and letters. Also some digits such as "zero" and "one" can often look like the letters "O" and "L" or "I." Rechecking these particular digits or letters in the product key often resolve the failed attempt to verify the key.
