Wipe the exterior of the Shimano Symetre reel with a damp rag or towel. Remove any dirt and debris including pond scum that might have accumulated during use. Pay attention to the handle, bail wire and spool of the reel in particular.

Turn the handle of the Symetre reel. Listen for any unusual sounds and pay attention to the movement of the handle. Remove the handle by loosening and removing the retaining screw on the opposite side of the reel body from the handle.

Clean the the internal shaft of the reel handle and apply a small amount of reel oil. Turn the handle as a test and to distribute the oil on the internal shaft. Assemble the retaining screw to the reel securely.

Loosen and remove the drag control knob on the front of the reel by turning it to the left. Pull the spool from the threaded post. Examine the spool for signs of damage such as dents or cracks. Replace the spool if necessary.

Wipe any dirt or debris from around the base of the threaded post and from the bottom of the spool with a damp rag. Apply a few drops of oil to the post. Place the spool back on the post and secure it with the drag adjustment knob.
